Minister for Climate and Energy visited Aikan Facility

(Press release) The Danish Minister for the Environment, Mrs Lykke Friis, visited the combined...

(Press Release)
The Danish Minister for the Environment, Mrs Lykke Friis, visited the combined biogas and composting facility of BioVækst near the city of Holbæk. The facility turns organic household waste from residents in nine neighbouring municipalities into biogas and fertilizer.
The Aikan facility receives more than 20,000 tonnes of source-separated household waste and other organic residues every year. First biogas is recovered, then the waste is composted and in the last resort separated residues such as plastics etc. are utilised in incineration. The phosphorous-bearing compost is returned to agricultural soils as documented fertilizer without xenobiotic substances. Phosphorous is becoming a scarce resource globally and has therefore seen steep price increases in recent years.
The Aikan technology causes lower CO2 emissions than incineration. CO2 savings are found in the generation of biogas and through composting, which delays CO2 emissions for up to 100 years. At the Aikan facility 50% of the biogas energy is converted into power and the other 50% into heat. In waste incineration, typically just 25% of the energy is converted into power, while 75% turns into heat, which is a less attractive energy form. Biogas from an Aikan facility can also be distributed and stored through the Danish natural gas grid.
The facility near Holbæk has been in stable operation since its establishment in 2003. It is capable of managing waste regardless of the rate of impurities.
During the visit, the climate- and Energyminister Lykke Friis said: “It is very positive to see a biological treatment plant that apparently does not have the type of problems that caused closure of biogas-generating waste management facilities in Elsinore and Aarhus in the past".
The Aikan technology has been developed by Danish Solum Gruppen in cooperation with Danish universities. Solum Gruppen has just received DKK 1.5 million from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency under the Subsidy Scheme for Environment-Efficient Technology in view of testing interaction between the Aikan technology and a manure-based biogas plant, which plays a central role in the Governments Green Growth plan. Lykke Friis underlined that the Government finds it very important that Denmark increases the production of biogas.
Solum Gruppen has been appointed four times as a cutting-edge growth company by Denmark’s leading business magazine Børsen. In May 2009 Solum Gruppen was awarded the Climate and Environment Award instituted by Denmark’s Liberal Party and presented by Danish Prime Minister, Mr Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The following municipalities deliver organic waste to BioVækst: Egedal, Frederikssund, Gribskov, Halsnæs, Holbæk, Kalundborg, Odsherred, Ringsted and Rødovre.
