Reference plants

Solum Gruppen has up till now constructed two integrated anaerobic digestion and composting plants based on the Aikan concept - one in Denmark and one in Norway.

  • Bio Vækst A/S, Hagesholmvej 7, DK-4532 Gislinge
  • Hera Vekst AS, Hornmoen, N-2400 Elverum

Bio Vækst is owned 50% by Solum, 33% by Vestforbrænding and 17% by KARA/Noveren.

Hera Vekst in Elverum is owned 32% by Solum and 68% by SØIR/GIR. The plant itself is owned by SØIR.

The Aikan plants are due to their batch construction flexible in relation to capacity. Thus Aikan can be designed for small amounts and extended later.

The plant license at the Danish facility is for 26,000 tonnes of source separated biodegradable household waste and 11,000 tonnes of garden waste. But due to limited amounts of waste at present it is only built to treat half the license capacity. The plant was built in 2003. It has been treating up to 14,000 tonnes of source separated household waste annually. Today 10,000 tonnes are being treated. However, thanks to the flexibility of the Aikan concept, excess capacity is utilized for composting and sanitizing dewatered sewage sludge.

The plant in Norway is licensed for a capacity of 28,000 tonnes of source separated biodegradable household waste and 11,000 tonnes of garden waste. The plant started operating in June 2005 and treated in 2007 28,000 tonnes of waste.

Both operating plants are owned in cooperation with regional, intermunicipal waste management companies.

The two existing Aikan facilities have been constructed on site with existing buildings and infrastructure. Thus, reception halls, composting facilities etc. have been transformed to work seamlessly together with the Aikan system.
